Instagram has been all over the news regarding apps, social networks and acquisition. With Instagram's recent launch into the Android market pushing them past 30 million users, and their aquisition from Facebook, it is easy to see why folks can't stop talking about the app.
Instagram, which was only available on iPhones until April 2012, is a powerful tool to share your photos with friends, family, and the world. The app allows you to follow brands and view a feed of their mobile uploads. Both Twitter & Facebook saw the power of Instagram–simultaneously making offers to acquire it–and businesses should be paying attention as to why the power of the app can bring serious value to your brand.
About a month ago there were rumors saying that Twitter made an offer to purchase Instagram. Then, on April 9th, Facebook announced that they would be aquiring Instagram for the purchase price of $1 billion dollars ($500 million more they were valued at).
Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook, CEO) on April 9th shared the following on his Facebook page:
"I'm excited to share the news that we've agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook. For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests. We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram's strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook..."
This social media app is extremely intuitive, user friendly, and "instant". Within a few taps of your finger you can share your photos with the world and all of your social media channels. Instgram gives users the ability to search for tags and keywords, which in turn allows you to search through endless amounts of photos. For example: if you are opening up a cafe, you can search "cafe" and get thousands of related beautiful images for inspiration.
Since Instagram's launch into the Android market, more and more brands are starting to realize the power of reaching their markets with visuals on mobile devices. From boutiques to jewlry designers, these brands can speak directly to their target audience without the use of a computer.
